Sauti Sol Puts Kenya On The Global Map, Again!

Kenya’s afro-pop band, Sauti Sol, has done it again. The band’s influence and success over the years has seen them nominated alongside other African artists and media personalities in the Nickelodeon kid’s choice awards.

The band came into being in 2005 as an acapella group that originally comprised of Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano and Savara Mudigi and later joined by Polycarp Otieno (the guitarist). Their Debut album titled Mwanzo was released in 2009 and was received rather positively. This was followed by the albums Sol filosofia and Live and die in Afrika that were released in 2012 and 2015 respectively.

Attention drawn to the group thanks to their first album saw them nominated for the Best African Newcomer at the African Music Awards in 2010. Their subsequent releases saw them nominated and win several more awards.

Some of the most mentionable awards bagged by the group include; Hottest group award at the 2015 and 2018 African Entertainment Awards, Best African group in both the 2015 and 2016 African Muzik Magazine Awards, Best African Group Award as well as The Best Producer Award during the 2010 All Afrrican Music Awards, Best Music Video Award and Best East African Artist during the 2014 and 2015 Bingwa Awards respectively. They were also awarded as the most gifted East African Video at the Channel ‘O’ music awards in 2012 and their video Nishike (Touch Me) received the Most watched video on You Tube in Kenya at the 2014 Google Recognition.

The group has not only gained awards in the music industry alone. They are also recognized as fashion icons in their own right. To solidify their place in the fashion industry, the group has been awarded various awards in different fashion related categories. They bagged the most stylish East African Male award at the Abryanz style and Fashion Awards in 2015 and the Most Stylish Male Artiste award in 2017.

The group is known for its rather goofy sense of humour, the down to earth nature of its members and their ease of interaction with their fan base. They are not all fun and games. The group has dedicated their life to their music and have turned their name into a globally recognizable brand. Unlike most others, they are self-produced and are in charge of the charting out their own brand direction.

Although the group lost to their Nigerian colleague Davido, we still wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours.
