Robert Sylvester Kelly aka R Kelly has been in the lime light the last few years and all for the wrong reasons. The artist has had a long successful footprint in the music business before his name was tarnished thanks to sexual abuse claims.
He has won the hat of a basketball player, a singer, a song writer, and producer since his career took off in 1997. The 52 year old celebrity is known for releasing hits throughout the years such as Ii believe I can fly, Happy people, Ignition, World’s greatest, Trapped in the closet, among others. He has also worked with some of the top names in the music industry such as Jayz, Nas, Sean Combs aka P-diddy, the late Notorious B.I.G, and the late Michael Jackson.
His career has however, been far from rosy. It has been clouded by allegations of sexual harassment and assault of all kinds. In the early 90s, he faced a law suit filed by the late Aaliyah’s parents to annul their illegal marriage. At the time of marriage, Aaliyah had been 15 years of age and R Kelly 27 years old.
In 2002, the celebrity was back in the court room having been charged with 14 counts of child pornography. However, following lack of evidence as a result of the refusal by the alleged victims to testify, he was acquitted of the charges in 2008.
In 2017, a story broken by BuzzFeed brought to the limelight the accusations of a sex cult run by R Kelly. In 2018, he was accused by a former partner having knowingly passed an STI to her. He was again charged with 10 counts of aggrevated sexual abuse of minors by an Illinois county judge. He was later released on a $1 million bond.
Troubled has rocked R Kelly’s world again after having allegedly lied to the court about needing to travel to Dubai for performances that had already been booked. Given the nature of his accusations, it is no wonder the Dubai government has been quick to distance itself with the artist and the said concerts.
To further strengthen their motion to travel, R Kelly’s defence clain=med that further than perfoming at the said concert, he was scheduled to meet with the royal family, a statement that was quickly denied by the government’s media office.
His legal team still maintains that he had a contract with legit promoters in the Sheikhdom. Seeing that one cannot be extradited to the U.S.A when in Dubai, it raises a few eyebrows that the celebrity would seek permission to travel there amidst all the legal and financial trouble he finds himself in.
