Demi Lovato has opened up about an incident that nearly took her life eight months ago. Lovato took an overdose in July last year and had to be booked into a treatment facility. Prior to the incident, Lovato had been substance-free for 6 years.
18th march would have been her seventh anniversary of being sober, had the incident not occurred. Lovato took to her Instagram to express how she felt about the anniversary. She wrote,
“ Today I would’ve had 7 years sober. I don’t regret going out because I needed to make those mistakes, but I must never forget that’s what they were: mistakes,”
The phrase “going out” in this case might not necessarily mean hitting the clubs and such. Lovato’s overdose happened in a private residence. She might be pulling the phrase from AA’s book, where it means relapsing.
Lovato expressed her gratitude to AA whom she says will never shut the door on anyone, regardless of how many times they relapsed. Lovato has continued being optimistic about her recovery, and sources reveal that she remains fully committed to staying sober.
“ I didn’t lose 6 years: I’ll always have that experience but now I just get to add that time with a new journey and time count.” She added.
Lovato started dating Henry Levy shortly after undergoing treatment. Many of her fans were concerned about that relationship. They met in rehab, and Levy was just starting his recovery journey as well. Newly sober people are often discouraged from picking up new relationships immediately.
They have since broken up though. The cause of the break-up is still unclear, Lovato seems more focus on keeping her sobriety.
Concluding her post, Lovato sent a message of hope to other people who might have struggled with recovering from addiction. She wrote;
“ If you have relapsed and are afraid to get help again, just know it’s possible to take that step towards recovery. If you’re alive today, you can make it back. You’re worth it.”
Lovato had been a big inspiration for recovering addicts during the years that she was sober. She is now intent on embracing that role once again, and we wish her the very best. She has always been an inspiration to many fans around the world.
